International Summer School, University of Stirling

I was fortunate enough to study abroad in an International Summer School Program (ISS) through CIS Australia. I studied Education within the context of the British perspective in conjunction with a Sports Management course that delved into the fundamental contrast between English and Scottish societal values.

Living in a traditional town, whilst studying at an authentic Scottish university with a castle on campus was an extraordinary experience. I was able to explore nearby sites such as Glenfinen, Edinburgh and St Andrews in my spare time. Due to the incredible 17 hours of daylight during the Scottish summer! Studying alongside other international students made this truly a cosmopolitan experience.

Highlights

Here are a few of the key highlights that made this experience unique:

  • Studying at an internationally recognised and academically rigorous university ranked among the top tier of British universities for teaching and career placement. The courses were challenging and practical.
  • Visiting Scottish high schools during our field trips to understand how they function, resources, teaching pedagogy and curriculum design. Not to mention, time to interview and ask questions of staff!
  • University of Stirling (UoS) is the foremost institution in sport science in the UK that trains and houses Olympic athletes and swimmers in preparation for international events. The gym, swimming pools, tennis courts and football fields were insane!
  • Being part of a campus on the estate of an 18th-century castle – considered one of the most beautiful university campuses in Europe!
  • Scottish culture and hospitality – the friendly people made my time there unforgettable.
  • Lying in a valley and above the historic town of Stirling, with greenery everywhere, you feel like you are in a fairytale come to life.
